A non-invasive molecular imaging tool for surrogate quantitation of multidrug transporter function will, however, also be relevant for other diseases, such infectious diseases (HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis) and addiction, and our findings can be directly translated to other major diseases, in particular depression, schizophrenia and cancer.
Multidrug transporters play a role in a number of other barrier functions as well (gut, liver). Knowledge of their function is therefore profitable in a much wider area than the Blood Brain Barrier alone.
