Impact
EURIPIDES will develop a generic tool for the prediction, diagnosis, monitoring and prognosis of major CNS diseases, and provide support and guidance for therapeutic interventions.
An in-vivo surrogate (imaging) marker for the quantitation of (regional) multidrug transporter-function is important, because it will:
- identify the importance of transporter overexpression in mediating pharmacoresistance in patients with CNS disorders;
- support the development of novel drugs or strategies targeting or evading these mechanisms;
- allow to predict treatment response with early identification of patients who will not benefit from certain drugs that are multidrug transporter substrates, thereby encouraging earlier use of alternative therapies, such as surgery;
- lead to the use of specific efflux transporter inhibitors at the BBB for the treatment of drug-resistant patients, in whom over-expression these transporters may prevent CNS drugs from reaching their pharmacological targets in sufficiently high concentrations to exert a desirable effect.
